Impact of Bt Cotton on Punjab Soils

چکیده

One of the least understood areas in the environmental risk assessment of genetically modified crops is their impact on soil and plant-associated microbial communities. In a review of literature, Dunfield and Germida (2004) found that transgenic plants and plant litter can influence the composition of the plant-associated microbial communities. Their review also points to such effects having been shown in a variety of plants with different transgenes. However, these effects are dependent on field site, seasonal variation, and method of analysis used to assess the community. They conclude by saying that changes in microbial communities associated with growing transgenic crops are relatively variable and transient in comparison with some other well-accepted agricultural practices. Even other scientists who reported that no conclusive research is present to conclude that significant direct effects on soil are present with transgenic crops also reiterate that a comprehensive evaluation of environmental impacts of GM crops grown under a wide range of soil properties is sorely missing.

Occupational hazards and health cost of women cotton pickers in Pakistani Punjab

BACKGROUND Farm workers and female cotton pickers are exposed to residual impacts of pesticide use in cotton production, in addition to dust, ultraviolet radiation, etc. Cotton picking causes various health hazards among cotton pickers with varied health cost. A soil bacterium known as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is incorporated in cotton seed through genetic modification and it has resistance ...

Underlying Constructs of Farmers’ Perceptions towards Bt Cotton Among Former Cotton Farmers in Northern Ghana: Empirical Application of Q Methodology

It is often argued that learning from best examples in the neighbouring Burkina Faso and elsewhere, Ghana can succeed in revamping the collapsing cotton industry by introducing Bt cotton to farmers. This paper therefore presents a survey findings on farmers’ views and perceptions towards the possible introduction of Bt cotton. A stratified random sampling techniques was applied in selecting 254...

TRANSGENIC PLANTS AND INSECTS Long-Term Assessment of the Effects of Transgenic Bt Cotton on the Function of the Natural Enemy Community

Field studies to assess effects of transgenic crops onnontarget organisms primarily have focused on nontarget abundance and diversity, whereas few have examined effects on nontarget community function. A 5-yr Þeld study in Arizona assessed whether transgenic cotton producing the Cry1Ac toxin of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) had an effect on the natural enemy communityÕs impact on three key pests....

An Analysis of Bt Cotton Cultivation in Punjab , Pakistan Using the Agriculture Decision Support System ( ADSS )

Introduction Pakistan is the 4th top producer of cotton in the world (Table 1), yet in terms of yield it is at the distant 10th position. There are many possible reasons for low cotton yields in Pakistan—high prices of agricultural inputs (pesticides, fertilizers, etc.), higher intensity of insect and pest attacks, deficiency of water for irrigation, lack of advanced technologies and awareness,...
